Gorgeous.

— Suzanna

This was such an unexpected, magical tale, yet one that so beautifully captured the essence of being human and being torn with emotions. A young couple meet just as their city falls to war. They are forced to flee and find out what their love means to them both, and also how to adapt to the rapid change that befalls them. This is more than their love story though; with interwoven stories of other individuals experiencing life in other parts of the world, these stories are dropped like notes to add ripples that bring the story of this couple to a much wider level. From a mute mother who won't leave her home, yet remembers her younger years to a loving elderly couple who find themselves by surly chance, this novel is an incredibly insightful work of writing. I've marked pages and read sections aloud and it has brought me to tears. It's a book for any age and any time, fore the subject is unceasing and ever-relevant.

FINALIST FOR THE 2017 MAN BOOKER PRIZE

FINALIST FOR THE 2017 KIRKUS PRIZE

NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW, TIME MAGAZINE AND GUARDIAN

"A breathtaking novel... that] arrives at an urgent time." -NPR.org

"Moving, audacious, and indelibly human." -Entertainment Weekly, "A" rating

A finalist for the Man Booker Prize and a New York Times bestseller, the astonishingly visionary love story that imagines the forces that drive ordinary people from their homes into the uncertain embrace of new lands.

In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet--sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors--doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice. Leaving their homeland and their old lives behind, they find a door and step through. . . .

Exit West follows these remarkable characters as they emerge into an alien and uncertain future, struggling to hold on to each other, to their past, to the very sense of who they are. Profoundly intimate and powerfully inventive, it tells an unforgettable story of love, loyalty, and courage that is both completely of our time and for all time.
