Oblong came into existence in Millerton’s 125th year. Millerton started when the railroad came though in 1850 and Oblong got started when Dick Hermans and Holly Nelson needed to find a way to make a living in this rural community. We literally rented a small storefront (a former liquor store whose shelves were just perfect), borrowed a little money and a pickup truck, drove to a book wholesaler in New York City, filled up the truck, came back, and opened for business. Six years in the original space, eight years in a larger space across the street, and then, in 1990, we bought the building we now occupy. In 1994, we bought the building that now houses Oblong, Jr. Holly officially retired from Oblong in 2001 and began an exotic horse riding adventure venture. Dick continues as Oblong’s Millerton manager with the help of a veteran staff. Oblong Millerton is a unique store. Our main floor is a general bookstore that has a lived-in feel and a selection that we describe as comprehensive and eclectic. The pared down music department in Millerton is filled with the best in all genres. Oblong Jr. in its separate but connected building is an incredible conglomeration of books, toys and music for all ages. Our connected buildings, both built in 1880, form the core of Millerton's shopping district. |
