Two women historians with expertise in very different areas - fascism and presidential history - saw their worlds collide in 2017. In a wide-ranging conversation, award-winning NYU professor Ruth Ben-Ghiat and NY Times bestselling author Alexis Coe unpack the Trump years and discuss the future of democracy and what it all means for progress. From Italy's first woman Prime Minister - a Fascist - to America's still unrealized "Madame President."

Ruth Ben-Ghiat is Professor of History and Italian Studies at New York University. She is an MSNBC Opinion Columnist and commentator on CNN, MSNBC, and other media outlets about authoritarianism, Fascism, and threats to democracy around the world. Her latest book, Strongmen: From Mussolini to the Present (W.W. Norton & Company) examines how illiberal leaders use corruption, violence, propaganda, and machismo to stay in power, and how resistance to them has unfolded over a century. Ruth also publishes Lucid, a newsletter about threats to democracy (

Alexis Coe is an American presidential historian. She is the New York Times bestselling author of You Never Forget Your First: A Biography of George of Washington, now out in paperback. Alexis is the first woman historian to write a biography of Washington in over a hundred years and the only woman in over four decades. She is working on a third book on young John F. Kennedy for Crown and, thanks to a grant from Substack, launched Study Marry Kill, a newsletter, in December 2020. Alexis has contributed to the New Yorker, the New York Times opinion section, the New York Times Magazine, the New Republic, the Paris Review, Glamour, and many others. Her work has been featured in The Best American Essays and The Best American Travel Essays, and her essay on marriage and academia was one of the Atlantic's Great Debates of the Year.
